Bad Breath in Cats Could Mean Dental Problems

Why your cat’s fishy breath might be a bigger issue

Does your cat’s breath make you wrinkle your nose? While it’s normal for cats to have some odour, consistently bad breath could be a sign of dental disease. February is Pet Dental Health Month, and it’s the perfect time to learn how to spot the signs and take action to protect your cat’s oral health.

The link between bad breath and dental disease

Bad breath in cats is often caused by bacteria in the mouth. When plaque builds up on the teeth, it can harden into tartar, leading to gum inflammation (gingivitis) and more severe dental disease. If left untreated, the bacteria can spread, causing pain, tooth loss, and even affecting your cat’s overall health.

Other signs of dental problems in cats

In addition to bad breath, watch for these symptoms:

  • Drooling: excessive drooling could indicate pain or gum issues

  • Reduced appetite: cats with dental pain may eat less or avoid hard foods

  • Red, inflamed gums: healthy gums should be light pink, not red or swollen

  • Discoloured teeth: yellow or brown tartar buildup is a sign of dental disease

  • Behaviour changes: cats in pain may become irritable or hide more than usual

How to keep your cat’s teeth healthy

  • Brush regularly: use a cat-safe toothbrush and toothpaste to clean their teeth. Start slowly to get them comfortable with the process.

  • Dental treats: look for treats that promote dental health by reducing plaque and tartar.

  • Vet checkups: annual dental exams and professional cleanings can prevent problems before they become serious.
