Preparing Your Dog for Colder Weather

Simple steps to keep your dog warm, comfortable, and healthy this winter

As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, many dogs need a little extra help staying warm and comfortable. While some breeds relish frosty mornings, others feel the chill much more easily, especially older dogs, thin-coated breeds, puppies, and pets with arthritis.

Know your dog’s cold tolerance

Greyhounds, Whippets, Staffies, and other short-haired breeds lose heat quickly, meaning chilly walks can be uncomfortable or even painful. Senior dogs and those with joint issues may also find the cold makes stiffness worse. If your dog hesitates at the door or seems reluctant on walks, they might need more support.

Get ready with these cold-weather steps

  • Layer up! Few bits of kit beat a warm coat, especially for lean or older dogs.

  • Protect the paws: Wet, muddy, or frozen ground can cause cracked pads. Remember to rinse paws and dry thoroughly after walks

  • Reflective gear: Visibility is key for safety for dark mornings and late afternoon walks. Invest in a reflective vest or coat, or LED gear – stay safe, be seen!

  • Adjust walk times: Plan walks to maximise daylight and reduce exposure to bitter winds.

Keep them warm indoors

You may notice dogs eating or sleeping more as they conserve energy, or being more energetic to warm up. Make sure your dog has a comfy, draft-free sleeping area with plenty of soft bedding. Senior dogs often benefit from orthopaedic beds and gentle warmth to ease stiff joints.

Need advice?

All dogs react differently to seasonal changes. If you think your dog is acting unusually, such as not wanting to go for walks or going off their food, struggling with stiffness, limping, or slowing down as temperatures drop, it's worth a chat with the vet.

A winter health check can identify early signs of arthritis or discomfort and get them onto the right treatment or supplements.
