Get Ready, Spring is Coming!
Flea and tick prevention for dogs
Brighter mornings, longer walks, and more time outdoors – hooray, spring is almost here! While we all welcome the warmer weather, fleas and ticks do too. These tiny parasites thrive as temperatures rise, making now the perfect time to get ahead of flea and tick season.
Why flea and tick prevention matters
Unfortunately, fleas and ticks aren’t just a summer problem anymore; milder winters mean they can survive all year round. Prevention is much easier than dealing with an infestation later:
Fleas – a single flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, meaning an infestation can quickly spiral out of control. Flea bites cause itching, skin irritation, and in some cases, allergic reactions.
Ticks – these tiny pests attach to your dog’s skin and can transmit diseases like Lyme disease, which can affect both pets and humans.
How to keep your dog protected
Use preventative treatments: vet-recommended flea and tick treatments (spot-ons, tablets, or collars) keep parasites at bay.
Check your dog regularly: run your hands through their fur after walks, especially if you’ve been in wooded areas or long grass. Ticks love to hide in ears, armpits, groin, and between the toes.
Keep bedding and home clean: wash your dog’s bedding regularly and vacuum to remove flea eggs and larvae before they hatch. Fleas can survive for months in carpets and upholstery.
Be cautious in high-risk areas: ticks thrive in long grass, woodlands, and areas with deer or livestock, so stick to clear pathways whenever possible.
Know the signs of infestation: scratching, red skin, excessive grooming, head shaking, and tiny dark specks (flea dirt) in the fur could mean fleas are present. Ticks look like small bumps attached to the skin – if you find one, remove it safely with a tick remover tool.
