Don’t Let Parasites Crash Your Summer
Protect your dog from fleas, ticks, and heartworm this summer
With a little luck, summer is a time for longer walks, fun adventures, and making the most of the warmer weather with your dog. But unfortunately, it’s also prime time for parasites like fleas, ticks – and, if you’re travelling abroad, there’s heartworm to protect against too.
These tiny troublemakers thrive in the heat and can quickly turn a lovely day out into a vet visit. Here's how to stay one step ahead.
Fleas – A year-round nuisance, worse in summer
Fleas love warm, humid environments, so summer is a peak season for infestations. Just one flea can lay hundreds of eggs, which can spread through your home quickly.
Flea bites cause intense itching and discomfort, and for some dogs, can trigger allergic reactions or skin infections. Prevention is much easier (and cheaper) than trying to treat an outbreak.
Tip: Even dogs that don’t mix with other pets can get fleas – just a walk through the park can do it.
Ticks – Sneaky biters in grassy spots
Ticks lurk in long grass and wooded areas, just waiting for a passing dog to hitch a ride. Once attached, they can transmit diseases like Lyme disease.
Signs of a tick bite can include:
A small bump
Redness or irritation
Lethargy or joint stiffness (in more serious cases)
Always check your dog after walks, especially around the ears, neck, armpits, and paws.
Heartworm – A hidden risk when travelling abroad
While heartworm isn’t a concern within the UK, it’s found in parts of Europe. It’s spread by mosquito bites and can be life-threatening if untreated.
If you’re planning a summer holiday abroad with your dog, ask your vet for a pet travel health check so get the right advice on heartworm prevention, tapeworm treatment and any other travel essentials.
