How to Help Cats Stay Slim and Active

Most cats won’t hit the gym – but there’s plenty you can do to keep them fit

Cats tend to gain weight slowly, it’s often easy to miss until one day, you notice that your once-sleek feline now sports a bit of a belly.

For indoor cats, weight gain is particularly common. Less space to roam and fewer chances for natural hunting-style play can lead to a slow but steady increase on the scales. But keeping your cat at a healthy weight is more than just an aesthetic concern – it’s essential for their long-term wellbeing.

Why a healthy weight really matters for your cat

A few extra grams might not seem like much, but in cats, even small weight gains can lead to serious health issues. Overweight cats are more likely to develop:

  • Arthritis – making movement painful and limiting activity even further

  • Diabetes – a chronic condition requiring lifelong management

  • Liver disease – particularly dangerous in overweight cats

  • Grooming difficulties – which can lead to skin problems and discomfort

And remember: cats are experts at masking pain. By the time you notice they’re uncomfortable, they may already be struggling.

How to help your cat stay fit and playful

1. Measure Meals – Don’t Eyeball It

Cats’ calorie needs are lower than many owners realise. Feeding "by eye" can easily lead to overfeeding. Use digital scales to measure each portion, and follow your vet’s guidelines for your cat’s specific needs.

2. Choose Food That Works for Them

Not all cat food is created equal. A vet-recommended diet tailored to your cat’s age, lifestyle, and health status will provide the right balance of nutrition without excess calories.

3. Cut Back on Treats and Grazing

It’s tempting to spoil them with extras – or leave food down all day – but constant access to food often leads to overeating. Stick to scheduled meals, and keep treats occasional.

4. Make Play a Daily Habit

Short, regular play sessions mimic natural hunting and keep your cat active. Just 5–10 minutes a couple of times a day with a feather wand, laser pointer, or ball can do wonders.
