Celebrate International Cat Day Today!

From curious kittens to chilled-out seniors, here’s how to keep your cat happy, healthy and purring

Whether they’re lounging in sunbeams or leaping across countertops, cats bring comfort, company and no small amount of character into our homes. On August 8th, we’re celebrating all things feline – and sharing a few vet-approved tips to help your cat thrive at every life stage.

Why this day matters

International Cat Day is more than just an excuse for extra cuddles (though we highly recommend those too!). It’s a great reminder to check in on your cat’s wellbeing – from mental stimulation to mobility, routine health checks to small signs that something might be amiss.

Indoor cats need stimulation too

While they may be safe from roads and fights, indoor cats can easily become bored or under-stimulated, which may lead to:

  • Weight gain or overeating

  • Scratching furniture

  • Reduced interest in play

  • Overgrooming or stress behaviours

Try these enrichment ideas:

  • Rotate toys regularly to keep things exciting

  • Use puzzle feeders to turn mealtime into playtime

  • Provide high perches or window views for safe exploration

  • Schedule short, daily play sessions – even 10 minutes can make a big difference

Health checks and hidden signs

Cats are experts at hiding illness. That’s why we recommend regular check-ups, even if they seem perfectly fine. Signs that might warrant a closer look include:

  • Changes in appetite or weight

  • Hiding more than usual

  • Bad breath or drooling

  • Litter tray accidents or going outside the box

  • Matted coat or reduced grooming
