Why microchipping matters
Microchipping your pet is not just a smart idea – it's the law for dogs and cats in the UK
June is Microchipping Awareness Month, so it's the perfect time to check your pet's microchip details and make sure everything is up to date.
Why microchipping is important
Microchips are permanent, tamper-proof forms of ID. If your pet ever gets lost, a chip is their ticket home. Collars and tags can fall off, but microchips stay with your pet for life.
What’s the microchipping procedure like?
Microchipping is straightforward and one of our most common procedures. The microchip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, is inserted under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades, using a small needle. It takes a few seconds and most pets barely notice it’s happening. Once in place, the chip lasts a lifetime and doesn’t require any maintenance – it is recommended to have it checked routinely when you attend the vet so you can rest assured it is working as expected.
For dogs and cats
It's mandatory to microchip dogs and cats in the UK. Failing to do so can result in a fine of up to £500:
Dogs: Must be microchipped by 8 weeks of age.
Cats: Cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks of age.
Have you moved or changed your number?
Updating your details is just as important as having the chip. If your contact info is out of date, the microchip won’t help in an emergency.
Who can access my pet’s microchip information?
Only authorised professionals – such as vets, animal wardens, or rescue staff – can access your pet’s microchip information. When they scan the chip, it reveals a unique ID number, which is then looked up on a secure database to retrieve your contact details.
Your personal information isn’t stored on the chip itself, and it’s not publicly accessible. So while the chip helps reunite lost pets with their families, your data stays safe and private.
