Is Your Pet Slowing Down?

Tips to keep older dogs and cats moving

A little stiffness doesn’t have to mean slowing down completely. As pets age, they may become less agile, but with the right support, they can stay active and comfortable well into their senior years.

Why do pets develop mobility issues?

Mobility problems can be caused by a range of factors, including age-related wear and tear, arthritis, past injuries, obesity, or even certain neurological conditions. Some breeds are also more prone to joint issues. It's not just senior pets – middle-aged animals can start showing signs of reduced flexibility, discomfort, or stiffness too.

Signs your pet might be struggling

  • Slower to get up or lie down

  • Reluctance to jump, run, or climb stairs

  • Stiffness after rest

  • Less enthusiasm for walks or play

How you can help

Supporting your pet's mobility doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it certainly isn’t all doom and gloom. This stage of life is a wonderful opportunity to care for them in new ways, strengthen your bond, and make small changes that bring real comfort and joy. With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can help your pet feel more confident, content and able to enjoy their favourite things. Try these tips:

  • Provide soft, supportive bedding to cushion joints and make resting more comfortable

  • Keep nails trimmed to prevent awkward posture and joint strain, especially on slippery floors

  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce unnecessary pressure on hips, knees, and elbows

  • Add gentle, consistent exercise into their routine—short walks, light play, or controlled lead walking around the garden

  • Offer raised food and water bowls to help pets with neck or back discomfort

  • Use ramps or pet steps to make sofas, beds, or the car more accessible without jumping

  • Incorporate brain games and enrichment activities to keep minds active while supporting overall wellbeing

  • Speak to us about mobility supplements, physiotherapy, or pain relief tailored to your pet's needs
