Is Your Pet a Bit Too Plump? Let’s Talk Weight...

National Pet Obesity Awareness Day is a great reminder to check in on your pet’s body

Pet obesity is more common than you might think – and it’s easy to miss. With so many shapes, sizes, and fluff levels, a few extra kilos might not seem like much. But even a small amount of excess weight can affect your pet’s joints, heart and overall quality of life.

Why does weight matter?

While we never, ever shame our pudgier pets, we know extra weight adds stress to their bodies and reduces the quality and length of their lives. Overweight pets are more prone to:

  • Arthritis and joint pain

  • Diabetes and heart disease

  • Heat intolerance

  • Shorter lifespans

If your dog or cat has become a bit more sedentary, is struggling to groom themselves, or has lost their waistline, it might be time for a weight check.

How to check at home

Run your hands gently along your pet’s sides...

  1. Can you feel their ribs easily?

  2. Are they hidden under padding?

  3. Do they have a waist when viewed from above?

If not, it might be time for a weight consultation to help get them back on track.
