Spring Flea and Tick Prevention for Dogs

Protecting your dog as temperatures rise

With more walks in local parks, woodland trails and grassy fields around outer London, dogs are naturally at greater risk during spring and summer. A little prevention now can save a lot of itching (and stress) later.

Why prevention matters

Fleas aren’t just a nuisance – they can cause:

  • Intense itching

  • Skin infections

  • Flea allergy dermatitis

  • Tapeworm transmission

And ticks? These small parasites often attach around the ears, neck, armpits or between the toes after countryside walks. Some ticks can carry diseases, which is why prompt removal and prevention are so important.

Start early, stay consistent

One of the most common things we hear is: "I’ll start treatment if I see fleas." The problem is, by the time you see them, there may already be an infestation developing in your home.

Preventative treatment works best when it is:

  • Given regularly

  • Started before peak season

  • Continued consistently throughout spring and summer

Every dog’s lifestyle is different. A city-based pup who sticks to pavements may need something different from a countryside explorer who loves long grass and woodland adventures.

After-walk checks

Even with prevention, it’s a good idea to build in quick checks after walks:

  • Run your hands slowly over your dog’s coat

  • Check ears, under the collar and between toes

  • Brush regularly to spot anything unusual

If you find a tick, it’s important to remove it promptly using a proper tick removal tool. Twist gently rather than pulling straight out – this helps ensure the whole tick is removed safely. If you’re unsure, just drop by and we can help.

Don’t forget the home

Flea eggs don’t stay on your dog – they fall into carpets, bedding and soft furnishings.

During warmer months:

  • Wash pet bedding regularly

  • Vacuum carpets and sofas frequently

  • Act quickly if you notice scratching

Early action prevents a small problem becoming a household infestation.
