Keep Them Safe – Lost Pet Prevention Tips for Summer

Simple steps to keep your dog or cat safe and sound

Summer brings sunshine, fresh air, and more time outdoors – but it also comes with more opportunities for pets to go missing. A garden gate left ajar, a loud firework, or a distracted moment during a walk can be all it takes. That’s why July, National Lost Pet Prevention Month, is a great time to double-check your pet’s safety.

Why do pets wander off?

Whether it’s a sudden noise, an unfamiliar place, or just their natural sense of adventure, pets sometimes make a dash for it. Dogs can panic and bolt; cats might go exploring and lose their way. It happens more than you might think, but with a few simple steps, it's preventable, plus with a few extra steps you can make it easier to find them again.

5 Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe This Summer

1. Microchip your pet and keep your details up to date. A microchip is your pet’s digital lifeline. If they get lost, it’s the quickest way for them to be reunited with you. Bonus points for a secure ID tag on their collar too.

2. Secure your home and garden. Check fences and gates for gaps or broken latches. A quick fix now can save you heartache later.

3. Practice recall especially in new places. Recall simply means your pet reliably comes back to you when you call them – every time. It’s one of the most important things you can teach your dog (and yes, even some cats!). Start practicing in quiet, distraction-free places like your garden or a hallway, then gradually move to busier areas like parks. Use a happy voice, treats, or their favourite toy as a reward – the goal is to make coming back to you the best thing ever.

4. Keep them inside during fireworks or storms. Loud noises can be terrifying for pets. Create a calm, comfy hideaway where they feel safe – think soft bedding, familiar scents, and some soothing background noise.

5. Plan ahead for summer trips. Travelling with your pet? Make sure their microchip is registered and that you’ve packed everything they need to feel safe and secure on the move. If you're going abroad, you may need extra documentation - talk to us about your pet travel needs
