Keep Cool and Carry On - weather wise tips to keep dogs safe this summer

From sunshine to showers, safety tips for your dog’s walks and playtime

The long days of summer are ideal for adventures, but changing weather – from heatwaves to sudden storms – can pose risks to our four-legged friends. Whether it’s scorching sun or rolling thunder, being prepared can help you keep your dog safe, calm and happy.

Heat still happens – don’t let your guard down

While recent rain may feel like a relief, hot spells often return quickly, especially after humid conditions. Remember, dogs can’t cool themselves like we do – overheating and burnt paws remain a danger, particularly for flat-faced breeds, older dogs, and young pups.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs

  • Excessive panting or drooling

  • Bright red or pale gums

  • Weakness, confusion, or collapse

  • Vomiting

If you spot these signs, move your dog to shade, offer cool (not cold) water, and contact us right away.

Safe summer tips – whatever the forecast

  • Walk early in the morning or after 6pm

  • Pavement test: If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws

  • Carry water and rest in the shade

  • Avoid hot surfaces like beach sand and artificial turf at peak heat

  • Never leave dogs in parked cars – not even for a minute

Stormy skies and sudden downpours:

Rain may cool things down, but it brings its own challenges – especially for dogs who are nervous, senior, or struggle with mobility.

Thunderstorm and wet weather safety

  • Scared of storms? Many dogs fear thunder. Keep them indoors during storms, close windows to muffle noise, and provide a safe hiding space.

  • Slippery surfaces: Wet pavements and muddy trails can lead to sprains or slips – choose steady, familiar routes.

  • Fungal risks: Damp skin under collars or harnesses can lead to rashes or hot spots – always dry your dog well after walks, and gently dry ears if they’ve been caught in the rain.

  • Lightning safety: Avoid open fields or woodland walks during lightning storms – short toilet trips only until it’s clear.
